Bad Effects of Smoking Essay Example for Free

Bad Effects of Smoking Essay Cigarette smoking is usually associated with breathing trouble and lung cancer. But smokers are at a high risk of developing several chronic disorders. Along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes, smoking is a major independent risk factor for a coronary heart disease or kidney failure. It causes damage by decreasing the oxygen flow to the heart. It increases the blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are fatal for the heart. A cigarette has many types of poisons, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, tar and most of all, nicotine. Apart from that, there are many other poisonous ingredients of varying toxicity. Nicotine is addictive and affects the arteries in a negative manner. Heartbeat increases, hypertension occurs and arteries get constricted due to nicotine. Oxygen supply to the heart is stopped due to carbon monoxide. Blood clotting and clogging gets increased. In the case of coronary artery, the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart gets decreased due to narrowing of the arteries. This strain leads to a chest pain or angina pectoris. Apart from the long-term bad effects, cigarette smoking affects the body right at the moment of smoking due to the presence of so many poisonous substances. Arsenic is a rat poison, methane is a rocket fuel, ammonia is used in floor cleaning, cadmium is used in batteries, carbon monoxide is part of car exhaust and hydrogen cyanide is a poison used in gas chambers. Every time one inhales smoke from a cigarette, all these poisonous chemicals enter into the blood through the lungs in small amounts. Even small amounts of such deadly poisons can harm the body. Smoking makes one smell bad, stains the teeth, causes the skin to wrinkle and gives bad breath. Cavities are found three times more in smokers than non-smokers. Hormone levels get lower due to smoking. Smokers cough for a long time. They are more prone to bronchitis and pneumonia. Smokers fall sick more often. Every time one inhales smoke from a cigarette, some of the air sacks in the lungs get killed. This way, parts of the lungs gradually get destroyed. This hampers activities like sports or singing where proper breathing is necessary. Smoking paralyzes the hair-like structures called cilia lining the lungs. They become incapable of sweeping out dust particles, smoke and pollens from the lungs. As a result these particles stay permanently in the lungs and form tar. Cigarettes are as bad as cocaine or heroin. The poisonous addictive in nicotine makes people feel good while smoking. This increases the chances of lung cancer or emphysema. One ends up being sick for a long, long time. Smoke from a cigarette increases fatty deposits in the blood and strains the heart. The risk of a heart disease and atherosclerosis gets aggravated due to this. Atherosclerosis is a disease in which fatty substances like cholesterol, cellular waste, calcium etc are deposited along the lining of arteries in a human body. LDL cholesterol increases and HDL cholesterol decreases due to smoking. Triglycerides increases and affects the cholesterol levels negatively.

America Needs the DREAM Act Essay example -- Argumentative, Persuasive

Illegal immigration has been a constant topic of debate in politics. For years now, politicians have tried to create an immigration reform that will encompass all problems dealing with illegal immigration. According to an article in the Economist (2010), there are four major immigration problems that the country is trying to focus on solving; these are: securing of the nation’s borders in order to prevent more illegal immigration, expanding the number of high-skilled foreigners that America allows in and keeps, finding a way to ensure an adequate supply of â€Å"unskilled workers, perhaps through a guest-worker program†; and finding a solution for dealing with the 11 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States. Till this day no one has been able to find the best solution to the growing problem, altogether. However, within the last decade, people such as Senator Richard Durbin and Representative Howard Berman have introduced a bill called the Develo pment, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, into Congress which aims â€Å"to provide legal status and educational opportu ¬nity to those who entered the United States as minor children† (United States conference of Catholic Bishops , 2010). Although this act does not fully solve the broken immigration system, it is one step closer to achieving a solution for the fourth issue previously mentioned. This paper will go on to give a detailed description of the DREAM Act, as well as its history through Congress. This will be followed by the explanation of the opposing views on this issue. Finally, the paper will reference the different laws and regulations that impact this issue as well as court cases that have dealt with the issue of immigrant education. Enger Tower History

Enger Memorial Tower Enger Memorial Tower was built in 1939 in order to remember Bert Enger, who immigrated to Duluth from Norway and became a powerful and successful furniture store owner through hard work and dedication. He believed in sharing his success with the city that helped him achieve it and allowed Duluth to develop land near Enger Tower, including the building of a park and a golf course. When he died in 1931 he left two-thirds of his estate to Duluth. In order to commemorate Bert Enger the citry decided to build Enger Memorial Tower. The 70-foot tower was built on the highest of four mounds in Enger Park and was built by L. J. Kilippen and Son. Bert Enger’s urn was attached to the structure. The tower was made of native bluestone and stood five feet tall. The park also included trails, and a beautiful view of the city. For the dedication ceremony Crown Prince Olav of Norway came to dedicate the memorial. It was the prince’s second dedicatory ceremony while in America, he also dedicated the Norwegian Pavilion at World’s Fair in New York City. The park’s locations is one of its best assets; it is located on a bluff, overlooking the city. It also has some of the most beautiful gardens in Duluth. One of its gardens is located on a hill and includes dwarf conifers that branch out from rock outcroppings. Another serves as a sort of dedication to Duluth’s sister city, Oh Ara, Japan; this garden has a pavilion and peace bell. Another garden has over 4,000 daffodils in the spring and white birth and poplar trees year-round. Hostas, full trees, and over 200 perennials line the path to the tower. Location: 16th Avenue West and Skyline Drive â€Å"The whole park has a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere. † -University of Minnesota

Reverse Racism - 1020 Words

Reverse Racism University Composition and Communication 2 January 8, 2012 Melissa Reed Reverse Racism Racism has existed for thousands of years. Not too long ago African American people were segregated against based on the color of their skin. Leaders both white and black loss their lives so that there would be acceptance one day of all people as equal. Now in 2011 we have a Mixed President who on the census marked himself as African American not counting heritage of a Caucasian mother. Americans can now many whom they fall in love with however family member still question the longevity of interracial marriage. Caucasians and their interracial families also now experience Reverse Racism for the same African American†¦show more content†¦My daughter looks â€Å"white† and I was made to put Caucasian as her race instead of mixed. With having a mixed president we should now live in a time where you can claim to be multiracial and not have to claim one side of your heritage over another. In my experience it is hard to fit in with African –Americans if you decide not to use slang or fit in with popular culture you are viewed as being â€Å"too white† Media feeds into the Reverse Racism as well. There are many movies that show African Americans calling the Caucasian â€Å"white boy† or not accepting him because of the color of his skin. I recently watched a movie called guess who starring Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac. The movie is about an African American girl who falls in love with a Caucasian man. She brings him home to meet her family and announce her engagement to her family. Her family is very reluctant to accept him because of his race. After a long weekend and time to get to know him they finally accept him into their family. All throughout the movie racist comments are made in reference to him and the father is even ashamed to announce to his coworker that his daughter’s finance is white. Many comedians use standup comedy to also make racist jokes. It seems that if you are making jokes against whites then it is not racist at all but if comments are made about blacks then it is deemed as racist. It sadness me to say that not only has racism in my eyes has not ceased it has also evolved andShow MoreRelatedReverse Sexism : Reverse Racism And Verse Sexism1308 Words   |  6 PagesDiscernibly, these retorts all demonstrate that it is possible to experience some kind of reverse subjugation, right?
